Andrea Tesei is a Professor of Economics at Queen Mary University of London's School of Economics and Finance. He holds additional affiliations as a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a Research Associate at the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance (CEP). His work focuses on political economy and development economics, particularly examining media impacts on political systems and the consequences of natural resource abundance. Tesei earned his PhD from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (2012) and was a visiting scholar at Northwestern University (2018–2019). His research has been published in top journals like the American Economic Review and Econometrica, and featured in major media outlets including the New York Times and Financial Times.
Research interests include:
- Traditional and new media's political/economic consequences
- Natural resources and political stability
- Technology adoption in developing economies
Key contributions include studies on mobile phones' role in African political mobilization (Econometrica, 2020) and the political legacy of entertainment TV (American Economic Review, 2019). His recent work explores language barriers in Indian agriculture (Review of Economics and Statistics, 2024) and the political economy of social media (2023).
