Andrea Manni

Andrea Manni is a Professor in the Department of Medicine at Penn State College of Medicine and serves as Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center. He is also affiliated with the Penn State Cancer Institute, where he chairs the Education Committee and contributes to cancer control initiatives.

Dr. Manni earned his MD from the University of Florence and completed his clinical training at St. John Hospital, Mount Sinai Hospital, and Case Western Reserve University, specializing in Internal Medicine and Endocrinology. He joined the Penn State faculty in 1982 and has maintained an active research, clinical, and educational career.

His research is centered on breast cancer, particularly the interplay between hormonal factors, polyamines, and dietary interventions. He was among the first to demonstrate Tamoxifen’s antitumor effects in hormone-responsive breast cancer. More recently, his work has focused on omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), in reducing breast cancer risk in high-risk populations such as obese postmenopausal women. His research integrates endocrine biology with nutritional oncology and has been supported by multiple NIH and federal grants.

The most recent publications highlight his work on DHA metabolites as antitumor agents, the role of quercetin in enhancing chemotherapy, and lifestyle modifications for cancer prevention. These articles reflect a sustained focus on translational research bridging basic science and clinical application.

Dr. Manni has been a dedicated educator, mentoring students and fellows and serving on key academic committees. He has chaired the Education Committee at the Penn State Cancer Institute since 2003, organizing the annual Cancer Symposium and the public forum Reducing Cancer in the Community. He has also served on NIH and Department of Defense grant review panels and as an editor for the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and other endocrine oncology journals.

He leads a multidisciplinary research team and has been involved in numerous collaborative projects, particularly through the General Clinical Research Center. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals in health and well-being through cancer prevention and public education.
