Ana Mónica Fonseca is an Assistant Professor in the Department of History at ISCTE – University Institute of Lisbon, affiliated with the School of Sociology and Public Policies. She is currently the Director of the Center for International Studies (CEI-IUL) and the Master’s in Modern and Contemporary History, and serves as Coordinator of the Global Politics and Security research group. She is also an Integrated Researcher at CEI-IUL.

Research Interests:
Ana Mónica Fonseca specializes in contemporary history, with a focus on Portugal-Germany relations during the Cold War, transitions to democracy in Southern Europe, European social democracy, and democracy promotion. Her work bridges history and political science, analyzing transnational political movements and diplomatic interactions during critical geopolitical shifts.
Publications Trends:
Her scholarly output centers on democratization processes, Cold War diplomacy, and the role of European socialist parties in shaping democratic transitions. She frequently publishes on Portuguese foreign policy, decolonization, and ideological transfers between Western Europe and Latin America. Her recent work includes contributions on the Azores’ geopolitical significance and diaspora dynamics.

She is actively involved in academic management, research projects, and editorial roles, including serving on the editorial boards of Ler História and Portuguese Journal of Social Science.
Labs and Teams:
She leads the Global Politics and Security research group at CEI-IUL and plays a central role in organizing major academic events such as the Europe as a Global Actor Conference and Transatlantic Studies Association meetings.
