Ana Xavier is a Guest Assistant Professor in the Department of History at ISCTE-IUL (School of Political Science and Public Administration) and an Assistant Professor at the Autonomous University of Lisbon, where she teaches in International Relations programs at undergraduate, master's, and doctoral levels. She is an Integrated Researcher at CEI-Iscte – Center for International Studies, specializing in Global Politics and Security. She also serves as a visiting professor in the Master's in International Studies and Doctorate in Political Science at ISCTE-IUL.
Her research focuses on European Union foreign and security policy, human security, strategic culture, defense studies, and the sociology of military institutions. She explores how the EU positions itself as a crisis management actor and the evolution of its strategic identity. Her work bridges academic research with policy-relevant analysis in international affairs.
The available publications indicate a strong interest in the sociological dimensions of military training and professional identity formation in Portuguese military academies. Though the number of indexed publications is limited, her work contributes to understanding the transformation of the military profession in contemporary democracies.

Ana Xavier has supervised six master's students to completion, guiding research on topics such as EU strategic culture, cybersecurity regulation, non-trade objectives in EU trade policy, Franco-German leadership in EU defense, the rule of law in Hungary, and asylum policy in Belgium. She has been involved in research projects such as ChangEU (2018–2020), which aimed to enhance civic engagement in EU politics among youth. Her teaching spans courses like International Relations in Contemporary Times, Europe as a Global Actor, and Strategy and Public Value.
She is actively engaged in public discourse as a guest presenter on RTP’s 'Olhar o Mundo' and a regular commentator on international affairs across Portuguese media, including RTP 3, Antena 1, TSF, and Rádio Renascença.
