Research Interests
Hanser’s scholarship bridges multiple sociological subfields. Her work interrogates the cultural logic of markets, the gendered dynamics of service labor, and the intersection of consumption and inequality. She examines how everyday encounters—whether in Chinese department stores, North American street-food scenes, or city buses—reproduce and challenge social hierarchies. Current projects include an ethnographic study of Chinese immigrant women’s postpartum practices in Canada and an investigation of social interactions on public transit.
Scientific Awards
- American Sociological Association Dissertation Award (2006)
- UBC Killam Teaching Prize (2013)
Graduate Supervision & Teaching
She mentors PhD students in Sociology, including Xueqing (Rose) Zhang, whose research focuses on health and gender inequality, and Lily Ivanova, who studies cultural representations of genocide. Hanser teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on consumption, economic sociology, and the sociology of food.
