Alexia Bloch is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia (UBC), affiliated with the Faculty of Arts. She specializes in socio-cultural anthropology with a focus on migration, gender, statelessness, and transnationalism. Her research explores post-socialist societies, particularly in Eurasia, Russia, and Siberia, examining how mobility and immobility shape communities and identities.
Bloch holds a Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and has conducted extensive fieldwork in Siberia, Istanbul, Moscow, and southern Moldova. She has supervised over 20 graduate students researching topics like migration, memory, and gender across regions including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Taiwan, Turkey, and the U.S. Her teaching and mentorship emphasize transnational perspectives and ethnographic methods.
Her research interests span migration policies, intimate relationships in diaspora communities, and the intersections of law and kinship. Current projects include a SSHRC-funded study on stateless migrant women and children in Russia. Bloch has been honored with awards including the UBC Outstanding Teaching Award and multiple Killam Research Fellowships.
