Dr. Amanda Penlington is a Senior Lecturer at the School of Arts, part of the College of Arts, Technology and Environment at the University of the West of England. She serves as the Associate Director (Animation and Drama) and leads key modules such as the Level 3 core module Final Year Project (Dissertations and Performance Projects) and the Level 2 option New Shakespeares. Her academic work bridges teaching, research, and theatrical practice.
- Education: BA (Hons) First Class Theatre Studies and Dramatic Arts, MA English and European Renaissance Drama, PhD Renaissance Studies – all from the University of Warwick.
Amanda specializes in Shakespeare and performance, with a focus on Early Modern/Renaissance drama. Her PhD thesis explored the evolution of Ben Jonson's plays in performance since 1977, and she recently contributed to the book This England, That Shakespeare. As Artistic Director of Bristol-based theatre company Writers' Block, she produces new works and directs performances at venues like the Arnolfini, Brewery Theatre, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.
Her research interests span Renaissance drama, physical theatre, and theatrical innovation, informed by her practical experience in directing and devising contemporary performances. Amanda also oversees the annual New Performance Festival, fostering emerging talent in the arts community.
