Dr. Elizabeth E. Tavares is an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Alabama, affiliated with the Hudson Strode Program in Renaissance Studies and the Medieval & Early Modern European Studies minor. Her research focuses on early English drama, theatre history, and Shakespeare in performance, with an emphasis on playing companies, repertory systems, and ecocritical approaches. She holds a PhD from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and a BA from DePaul University.
Her work has been supported by grants from the NEH, Mellon Foundation, and institutions like the Folger Shakespeare Library. Notable publications include studies on early modern repertory practices, Shakespeare's performance contexts, and collaborative theatre dynamics. She directs the Alabama Shakespeare Project, a performance-based research collective, and has contributed dramaturgical expertise to festivals like Oregon Shakespeare Festival and Portland Center Stage.
Key achievements include the 2025 Barbara Hodgdon Award for Shakespeare and Performance scholarship, as well as awards from the Medieval and Renaissance Drama Society. Her current book project examines repertory systems in early modern England, exploring how post-Reformation artistic collectives reshaped theatrical practices through curated performance cycles.
Dr. Tavares has also held fellowships with the Collaborative Arts Research Initiative (2021–2023) and co-directs the UA in Oxford Study Abroad Program. Her interdisciplinary approach integrates digital humanities, archival research, and performance analysis to illuminate early modern theatrical cultures.
