Amanda P. Cowen is the Interim John A. Griffin Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia and holds the Arthur B. and Claudia Cohen Bicentennial Eminent Professor of Commerce title. Her academic career spans research, teaching, and editorial leadership in corporate governance and strategic leadership.

Dean Cowen’s research focuses on corporate governance, strategic leadership, organizational reputation, and crisis management. She explores how stakeholders interpret and respond to organizational failures, with a particular emphasis on boardroom dynamics and the role of CEO gender in decision-making. Her work develops socially informed theories to explain governance outcomes and status-seeking behaviors in organizations.
Her publications span high-impact journals such as Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, and Journal of Applied Psychology, addressing topics like boardroom emotions, shareholder activism, and the ethics of executive compensation. Her research bridges macro and micro organizational theories, emphasizing interfirm coordination and status transfer.
