Alma Bournazian is a Senior Lecturer and Senior Academic Specialist in the American Sign Language (ASL) Program at Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities (CSSH). She has been a permanent faculty member since 1992, with prior adjunct experience dating to 1984. Her roles include curriculum development, teaching ASL at all levels, and serving as a placement evaluator for transfer and experienced signers.
Education:
- MS in Teaching American Sign Language, Western Maryland College
- BS in Sociology, Gallaudet University
Research interests focus on ASL pedagogy, Deaf Culture, and community advocacy. She has lectured nationally on Deaf Studies topics and serves as a freelance Certified Deaf Interpreter (CDI). Notable certifications include being the first Deaf ASLTA-certified professional in Massachusetts (2002), ACTFL OPI (2016), and RID CDI credentials.
Professional contributions extend to interpreter training and community engagement. She actively promotes Deaf perspectives through academic and outreach initiatives.
