Alison Steven is a Professor of Research in Nursing and Health Professions Education at Northumbria University, with additional roles as a Visiting Professor at the University of Genoa and a member of the Italian Inter-university Research Centre on Nursing Ethics. She holds a PhD (2002) from Newcastle University and has extensive experience in healthcare education and research. Her work focuses on enhancing workforce development and wellbeing to improve patient safety and quality of care through inter-professional education, work-based learning, and implementation science.
Education includes a PhD in Discourse Analysis of Clinical Skills Education, an MSc in Health & Social Research (2011), and a BSc in Nursing Studies (1997). Professional qualifications include Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (2012) and Nursing and Midwifery Council registration.
Research interests span patient safety education, healthcare workforce wellbeing, knowledge translation, and fatigue management. Key contributions include the SLIPPs Learning Event Recording Tool (SLERT) and the concept of 'emotional safety for learning.' She leads projects such as the Partnership for Workforce Sustainability in Underserved Areas (2025–2030) and Fatigue in the Healthcare Workforce (2023–2024).
Prof Steven supervises PhD students focusing on care homes as learning environments, healthcare worker fatigue, and clinical practice dynamics. Her work emphasizes practical implementation strategies for improving healthcare education and patient outcomes globally.
