Alison Macdonald is an Associate Professor (Teaching) in Social Anthropology at the Department of Anthropology, University College London. Her work bridges the fields of anthropology, education, and health studies, with a focus on radical pedagogies and participatory methodologies.

Her research explores democratic schooling, alternative education practices, and the socio-cultural dimensions of healthcare in urban India. Key projects include a UCL Grand Challenges-funded study on power-sharing in progressive schools (2022-2024) and an IAS-supported knowledge exchange initiative (2024). Earlier research investigated school exclusion impacts on youth identity and Hindu spiritual dimensions of breast cancer survivorship in Mumbai.
Publications span critical educational theory, health anthropology, and transnational cancer studies. She serves as Editor-in-Chief of Teaching Anthropology and pioneered collaborative ethnographic films like People Like Us. Her teaching emphasizes experiential learning and decolonizing approaches, convening courses on anthropological methods and ethnography.
