Alison Kirk is a Reader in Physical Activity for Health at Strathclyde University, part of the Health and Wellbeing School and the Physical Activity for Health group. She holds a BSc in Physiology and Sports Science (University of Glasgow, 1998) and a PhD in Promoting Physical Activity in Type 2 Diabetes (University of Glasgow, 2003). Prior to joining Strathclyde in 2009, she was a Lecturer at Dundee University (2003–2008). Her teaching expertise includes course leadership roles for the MRes in Physical Activity for Health, BSc Sport and Physical Activity, and BA programs in Sport and Psychology/Education. She has led roles as examination officer, disability coordinator, and Postgraduate Deputy Director, and has served as an external examiner for multiple universities. She has supervised 11 completed and 5 ongoing PhD students.
Her research focuses on translational studies exploring physical activity interventions for diabetes prevention and management, with over 130 peer-reviewed publications and £3M+ in grant funding. She specializes in digital health technologies, sedentary behavior, and intervention design. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and education. Key projects include the Sentinel Trauma App (PI) and studies on the CareFit mobile application for caregivers. She has collaborated internationally and is active in conferences, workshops, and editorial roles.
Alison has been an invited examiner for 12 PhD theses across global institutions and has led multidisciplinary grants and trials. Her research emphasizes real-world impact on healthcare policy and practice, particularly in diabetes and caregiving contexts.
