Allan Hewitt is a Senior Teaching Fellow and Head of School in the Department of Physical Activity And Health at the University of Strathclyde. He serves as Course Leader for the BSc Sport and Physical Activity program, managing academic administration, timetabling, and admissions. His roles include coordinating third-year studies and leading classes in areas such as Culture and Context, Coaching, and Research Projects. Hewitt’s research focuses on leveraging mobile technology and music to enhance physical activity, including sensorimotor synchronization, mobile music interventions, and activity monitoring using ubiquitous devices. He collaborates with labs like Perception and Action and Mobiquitous Lab on user interface design and large-scale interventions.
Education: PhD (University of Strathclyde, 2002) and BEd (University of Glasgow, 1993). Research interests span music psychology, accelerometer data analysis, and the interplay between deprivation and educational outcomes. He contributes to journals like Psychology of Music and Music, Technology and Education as an editor.
Recent projects include studies on sedentary behavior and glucose regulation in type 2 diabetes, funded by organizations like SportScotland. He advises student researchers like K. McMillan and collaborates across disciplines to promote active lifestyles through technology. His work aligns with UN SDGs, particularly in education and health.
