Alicia Cooperman is an Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at George Washington University (GWU), with previous roles as Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University (2020-2022) and Postdoctoral Research Associate at Princeton University (2019-2020). She holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University, an M.I.A. from UC San Diego, and a B.A. in Human Biology from Stanford University. Her research focuses on environmental politics, water security, climate change, and the political economy of development. Key areas include distributive politics in natural resource management, electoral accountability mechanisms, and the impact of climate crises on governance.
Her work combines field experiments, statistical analysis, and qualitative methods, with extensive research in Brazil. Notable grants include funding from the National Science Foundation, Fulbright-Hays Program, and EGAP. She has published in top journals like the American Political Science Review, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, and Comparative Political Studies, including a 2022 Frances Rosenbluth Prize-winning study on electoral cycles in disaster relief. Cooperman collaborates with institutions such as the Household Water Insecurity Experiences (HWISE) Network and Princeton’s Behavioral Science for Policy Lab.
