Dr. Alfredo Camacho is a Professor and former Head of the Department of Earth Sciences at the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources, University of Manitoba. He completed his Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the Australian National University in 1997. His research focuses on geochronology and tectonic processes, particularly the application of isotopic systems to understand cooling histories, fluid dynamics in subducting zones, and deformation mechanisms in the continental crust.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses such as GEOL 3290 (Structure and Metamorphism), GEOL 4670 (Global Tectonics), and GEOL 4910 (Advanced Field School), as well as a graduate course GEOL 7740-TO2 (Radiogenic Isotopes). His work bridges theoretical models with field-based observations, addressing questions about fluid origins, phase transformations under varying conditions, and the timescales of thermal events in tectonic settings.
Recent research highlights include studies on the thermal evolution of the Mount Everest massif, tectonometamorphic histories in Arctic terranes, and the mechanics of seismic and aseismic deformation in the lower crust. Camacho’s publications span over three decades, with notable contributions to understanding crustal dynamics through geochronology and microstructural analysis. His research has implications for mineral exploration, continental collision processes, and paleoclimatic reconstructions.
