Alexis Clark is an Assistant Teaching Professor in the Department of History of Art at North Carolina State University. She holds a Ph.D. in Art History and Visual Studies from Duke University (2014) and has held academic positions at the University of Southern California, University of California, Riverside, and Washington University in St. Louis. Her research focuses on global historiography and museology of 19th- and 20th-century art, particularly Impressionism, addressing themes like art and language, translation, international copyright laws, and the evolution of art-historical categories.
Dr. Clark has published peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Archives of American Art Journal, Burlington Magazine, Museum History Journal, and Oxford Art Journal. She co-edited Globalizing Impressionism: Reception, Translation, and Transnationalism (Yale UP, 2020), recognized as one of the most essential books in Impressionism, and co-edited an Oxford Art Journal special issue on 'Impressionism After Impressionism' (2023). Her work has been presented at institutions like the College Art Association, Musée d’Orsay, and the National Gallery in London and Washington, D.C.
In 2024, she will co-lead a workshop on 'Future Directions in Impressionism' at the Institute of Advanced Studies (London). At NCSU, she emphasizes global modern and contemporary art in her teaching, prioritizing hands-on engagement with art-historical practices for undergraduates.
