Bridget Alsdorf

Bridget Alsdorf is a Professor of Art and Archaeology at Princeton University, affiliated with the Department of French & Italian, Program in Gender & Sexuality Studies, Program in Media + Modernity, and the Humanities Council. Her research focuses on European art from the mid-18th to mid-20th centuries, particularly intersections with literature, philosophy, and social theory. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of California, Berkeley (2008).

Her work includes two major books: Gawkers: Art and Audience in Late Nineteenth-Century France (2022) and Fellow Men: Fantin-Latour and the Problem of the Group (2013). Current projects explore Scandinavian art through the lens of Søren Kierkegaard’s philosophy. She has received prestigious fellowships, including a 2023 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Teaching interests span European art history, interdisciplinary approaches, and methodologies. She advises doctoral students on topics like anarchism in art and gender studies. Her editorial roles include co-editing nonsite.org’s series on nineteenth-century art.

Awardees include the Mellon and Luce Foundation Fellowships, and she has contributed to exhibitions at major institutions like the Musée d’Orsay and the Guggenheim.
