Alexandra Warren is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Performing Arts at Elon University, affiliated with the Music Theatre Program and the BFA Dance Program. She is also the Founding Artistic Director of JOYEMOVEMENT, an interdisciplinary performance collective.

She holds a BA from Spelman College and an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, with postgraduate training from Yale University's Summer Directing Intensive, L’Ecole De Sables (Senegal), Urban Bush Women, and Dance Exchange. Her research and artistic practice explore the intersections of dance, musical theatre, and African Diaspora performance traditions.
Her choreographic and directorial work spans university productions, festivals, and national venues including the American Dance Festival, NY Live Arts, and Duke University. Recent scholarly output includes a contribution to the book Dance in Musical Theatre: A History of the Body in Movement and presentations at the International Federation of Theatre Research and the Collegium of African Diaspora Dance Conference. Her artistic projects emphasize embodied storytelling, community engagement, and reclamation of cultural narratives.
Alexandra has held recent residencies at Elsewhere Museum, the Inaugural Greensboro Downtown Parks Artist-in-Residence, and Trillium Arts. She has been a guest artist at Bucknell University, Guilford County Schools, and MTCA-New York. Her work is deeply rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration and pedagogy.
She is an active member of the Association for Theatre in Higher Education’s Embodied Histories Working Group, advocating for inclusive and historically grounded performance practices.
Alexandra mentors students through performance, choreography, and academic scholarship, guiding the development of emerging artists in both theatre and dance. She has directed and choreographed numerous mainstage productions at Elon, including Myths and Hymns, Deep Water Ballad, Head Over Heels, and upcoming works such as Legally Blonde (Fall 2024) and Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812 (Winter 2025). Her leadership extends to curriculum development and artistic programming within the department.
She leads and collaborates with performance ensembles and labs such as JOYEMOVEMENT and participates in interdisciplinary artist residencies. Her work at Elsewhere Museum and other experimental spaces reflects a commitment to innovative, site-responsive performance and community-based creation.
