Professor Alexander Klein is a Professor of Economic History at the University of Sussex Business School. He holds a PhD in Economics from CERGE-EI Prague (2006) and has held research fellowships at the University of Warwick, Jagiellonian University, and others. He joined Sussex in 2024 after serving at the University of Kent (2011–2024). Klein is a CEPR and CAGE Research Fellow, and a Research Associate at CERGE-EI. He holds editorial roles at journals like Economic History of Developing Regions and the European Review of Economic History.
His research focuses on Economic History, Economic Geography, Applied Econometrics, and Urban Economics, with notable work on spatial agglomeration, globalization, and long-run regional disparities. Klein’s recent studies explore topics such as populism’s impact on 19th-century elections, socialist economies’ failures, and geographic concentration in manufacturing.
Awards include his fellowships, and his work has been cited in multiple policy sources and media outlets. Klein’s affiliations with leading institutions underscore his contributions to interdisciplinary research in economic history and development.
