Alexander C. Tan

Alexander C. Tan is a Professor of Political Science and International Relations at the University of Canterbury, with affiliations including Honorary Professor at NZ Defence Force Command and Staff College, Associate Director of the NZ Contemporary China Research Centre, and Fellow at the John Goodwin Tower Center for Political Studies (Dallas, USA). His work focuses on Asia-Pacific security dynamics, US-China relations, and strategic diplomacy. He holds an adjunct position as University Chair Professor of Political Science at National Chengchi University.

Research interests include geopolitical competition in the Indo-Pacific, cross-strait relations, and the strategic choices of small states in the face of rising powers. His recent publications analyze Taiwan’s diplomatic strategies, India-Taiwan economic-security partnerships, and defense diplomacy in the Pacific region.

He has contributed to journals like Political Science, National Security Journal, and Outre-Terre, focusing on themes of nationalism, alliance systems, and hedging strategies. His interdisciplinary approach bridges political theory with real-world security challenges.
