Dr. Jürgen Haacke is an Associate Professor in the Department of International Relations at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). He specializes in Southeast Asian international politics and security, with a focus on ASEAN regionalism, Myanmar's foreign policy, and hedging strategies in shifting great power relations. Previously, he served as Director of the LSE Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (2016–2018) and is currently an Associate Fellow at the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), contributing to the Navigating the Indo-Pacific Programme.
His research combines theoretical and empirical analysis, particularly examining ASEAN's diplomatic and security culture, cooperative security mechanisms in the Asia-Pacific, and the influence of domestic politics on foreign policy in Myanmar. He has taught courses on strategic aspects of international relations, China's rise in East Asia, and Southeast Asia's intra-regional politics.
Dr. Haacke has supervised PhD research on topics such as Indonesia’s defense diplomacy, Myanmar’s insurgency dynamics, ASEAN institutional ethnography, and Malaysia’s China policy. His work often explores the intersection of grand strategy, security, and regional governance in Asia.
