Hyun Bang Shin

Professor Hyun Bang Shin is the Head of the Department of Geography and Environment at the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). His expertise spans gentrification, urban political economy, and the circulation of urban models, particularly in East and Southeast Asia. He has held pivotal roles, including Director of LSE's Saw Swee Hock Southeast Asia Centre (2018–2023) and editor of the International Journal of Urban and Regional Research (2021–2024). His research challenges Western-centric urban theories, emphasizing non-Western contexts and state-driven development.

Key projects include The Urban Spectre of Global China (examining Chinese capital's urban expansion) and Asian Capital and Smart Urbanism (analyzing smart city development in Kuwait and the Philippines). Awards include the 2023 Fellowship from the Academy of Social Sciences. His publications, such as Planetary Gentrification and Global Gentrifications, are foundational in urban studies.
