Alexander Birchler is Professor of Practice in Studio Art (Photography & Media) at the University of Texas at Austin and holds the John D. Murchison Regents Professorship in Art. Since 1990, he has collaborated with Teresa Hubbard on time-based media works exploring connections between social life, history and memory.
Birchler earned an MFA from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (1992) after studies at Academy of Art and Design Basel and University of Art and Design Helsinki. His research examines:
- Narrative structures in cinematic installations
- Historical reinterpretation through media
- Sensory engagement in art experiences
- Collaborative artistic methodologies
Major exhibitions include the 57th Venice Biennale (Swiss Pavilion), Tate Liverpool, Guggenheim Museum, and LACMA. Awards include residencies at Akademie Schloss Solitude, Künstlerhaus Bethanien, and Civitella Ranieri.
