Alex Oude Elferink

Prof. Alex Oude Elferink is a Professor of International Law of the Sea at Utrecht University, affiliated with the School of Law. He is Director of the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) since 2014 and has been a professor since 2015. His expertise focuses on maritime boundary delimitation, dispute resolution, polar regions law, and sea level change. He has contributed to cases before the International Court of Justice and arbitral tribunals, including the Arctic Sunrise incident and South China Sea arbitrations.

His research addresses the law of the sea, including continental shelf boundaries, Arctic governance, and high seas management. He leads the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law and teaches courses on ocean governance and maritime law. Key publications include works on BBNJ governance, LOSC dispute mechanisms, and polar regions legal frameworks.
