Youri van Logchem is an Associate Professor of Law at the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea, UiT – The Arctic University of Norway. He specializes in Law of the Sea and Environmental Law and serves as the Academic Director of the LLM in Law of the Sea program. Previously, he was a senior lecturer at Swansea University's Institute of International Shipping and Trade Law and a PhD fellow at Utrecht University's Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS).
His research interests include Law of the Sea, Environmental Law, Arctic shipping, autonomous vessels, submarine cables, maritime boundary disputes, and offshore resource exploitation. His scholarly work addresses complex legal challenges in maritime governance, particularly in disputed zones and emerging technological domains. He has published extensively in leading journals and with prestigious academic publishers such as Cambridge University Press, Hart Publishing, and Edward Elgar.
The recent publications highlight a consistent focus on legal frameworks governing maritime activities under international law, with increasing attention to Arctic issues, autonomous shipping, and the protection of critical underwater infrastructure. His work bridges doctrinal legal analysis with practical implications for state conduct and international adjudication.

He has supervised and collaborated on academic projects, including co-authoring works with legal experts such as Judge D. Anderson. His monograph The Rights and Obligations of States in Disputed Maritime Areas (Cambridge University Press, 2021) is a significant contribution to the field and has been cited before international courts and tribunals. He is actively involved in research and academic leadership.
He is affiliated with the Norwegian Centre for the Law of the Sea, a research hub dedicated to advancing legal scholarship on maritime issues, particularly in the Arctic context.
