Lan Nguyen

Dr. Lan Nguyen is an Assistant Professor at Utrecht University School of Law, Department of International and European Law, specializing in public international law, law of the sea, and dispute settlement mechanisms. She is affiliated with the Utrecht Centre for Water, Oceans and Sustainability Law (UCWOSL) and serves as an Associate Researcher at the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS).

Her educational background includes a B.A. in International Relations (summa cum laude) from the Diplomatic Academy of Vietnam, an LL.M in International Law (First Class Honours) from the University of Cambridge where she received the Clive Parry (Overseas) Prize for International Law, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge.

Dr. Nguyen's research focuses on the development of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) through dispute settlement bodies, maritime boundary delimitation, and the resolution of maritime disputes in Asia, particularly the South China Sea. Her work examines how tribunals interpret and develop international law while addressing complex geopolitical challenges. She has expanded her research to explore the intersection between UNCLOS and climate change law, analyzing how ocean governance frameworks can address emerging environmental challenges.

Her extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on dispute settlement mechanisms under UNCLOS, with increasing attention to environmental protection and climate change implications for ocean governance. Her work bridges theoretical legal analysis with practical applications in contemporary maritime disputes.

Dr. Nguyen has received the Clive Parry (Overseas) Prize for International Law during her studies at Cambridge. She serves as an editor for The International Journal of Marine and Coastal Law and as a peer reviewer for several prestigious journals including Cambridge International Law Journal, Leiden Journal of International Law, and Asian Journal of International Law.

She actively supervises students and has organized numerous academic events including the UU Summer School on International Law of the Sea and conferences on Regional Cooperation and Marine Environmental Protection. Her research has been supported through institutional affiliations with UCWOSL and NILOS, and she frequently participates in international conferences and workshops on law of the sea issues.
