معرفی
Dr. Alex Crawford is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba’s Department of Environment and Geography within the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. His research focuses on Arctic climate systems, particularly interactions between Arctic storms and the surface environment (ocean, sea ice, snow cover). He uses remote sensing, atmospheric reanalyses, and climate models to study climate change impacts. Previously, he was a visiting assistant professor at the College of Wooster (2017–2020) and a research associate at the University of Manitoba’s Centre for Earth Observation Science (2020–2023).
- B.A. in Geography and Geology, Colgate University (2012)
- M.A. in Geography, University of Colorado Boulder (2014)
- Ph.D. in Geography (Climatology), University of Colorado Boulder (2017)
Research Interests: Extratropical cyclones, sea ice dynamics, climate modeling, and the seasonal timing of Arctic ice advance/retreat. His work addresses how Arctic surface changes influence storm development and vice versa, with implications for human activities and ecosystems. Key projects include analyzing storm propagation trends, Arctic open-water periods, and extreme precipitation events.
Recent work highlights include studies on global temperature records, Arctic cyclone impacts, and sea ice biases in climate models. He emphasizes actionable climate science to inform policy and adaptation strategies.
Funding: Supported by Research Manitoba, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and other grants. Collaborates with international agencies like NOAA and ECMWF.
Labs/Teams: Affiliated with the Centre for Earth Observation Science (CEOS) and contributes to Arctic research networks.
