Dr. Karen Alley is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources and the Centre for Earth Observation Science. She holds a B.A. in Geology from Colgate University (2012) and a Ph.D. in Geological Sciences from the University of Colorado Boulder (2017). Her research focuses on glaciological processes, particularly ice-ocean interactions impacting sea-level rise, with emphasis on Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets. Key topics include basal melting beneath ice shelves, calving processes, grounding-line dynamics, and shear-margin stability.
Her work employs satellite remote sensing and field data to investigate mechanisms like melt-channel formation, tidal influences on ice flow, and structural integrity of ice shelves. Recent studies highlight the destabilization of Thwaites and Dotson Ice Shelves, emphasizing the role of basal melt and rift propagation.
Dr. Alley advises two graduate students: Elizabeth Hebel (MSc) and Debangshu Banerjee (PhD). She teaches courses in geomorphology (GEOG 2550) and physical geography (GEOG 1290).
Her research infrastructure includes the AMIGOS-3 multi-sensor stations, deployed in the Thwaites Glacier region to monitor climate and ice-ocean conditions. Publications span ice shelf stability, remote sensing advancements, and climate change impacts, with a focus on Antarctic dynamics.
