Dr. Kristina Brown is an Assistant Professor at the University of Manitoba's Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources, and holds the Canada Research Chair in Arctic Marine Biogeochemistry. She is affiliated with the Centre for Earth Observation Science and the Department of Environment and Geography. Her research focuses on Arctic marine biogeochemistry, freshwater dynamics, and the interplay between land, ice, and ocean systems.
Academic background includes a PhD in Oceanography from the University of British Columbia and a BSc in Biology and Earth and Ocean Sciences from the University of Victoria.
Her research investigates freshwater sources and pathways in Arctic marine systems, particularly in the Kitikmeot region of Canada. She uses geochemical tracers to study carbon cycles and collaborates with Nunavut communities on year-round monitoring of rivers and coastal ecosystems.
Recent publications emphasize environmental changes in Arctic regions, kelp distribution in the Northwest Passage, Arctic sea-ice ecosystems, and the geochemistry of Arctic rivers. Her work bridges earth and ocean sciences to address climate-driven shifts in polar environments.
- Awards: Canada Research Chair in Arctic Marine Biogeochemistry
Advising includes MSc student Oyster Tognotti. Collaborative projects focus on interdisciplinary Arctic research and community partnerships.
She is part of the Centre for Earth Observation Science, contributing to cutting-edge studies in polar environmental science.
