Dr. Jens Ehn is an Associate Professor in Physical Oceanography at the Department of Environment and Geography, University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Clayton H. Riddell Faculty of Environment, Earth, and Resources. His academic background includes a M.Sc. from the University of Helsinki (2001) and a Ph.D. from the University of Manitoba (2008). He has held postdoctoral positions at the Laboratoire d’Océanographie de Villefranche (2008–2010) and Scripps Institution of Oceanography (2010–2011), focusing on marine optics.
His research investigates sea ice’s influence on Arctic/sub-Arctic physical and biological processes, using field observations, satellite remote sensing, and modeling. Key themes include sea ice trends, air-ice-ocean interactions, terrestrial runoff effects, and light propagation in marine environments. Current graduate students include Lauren Corlett (MSc), Atreya Basu (PhD), Aura Diaz (PhD), and Kaushik Gupta (PhD).
Ehn’s recent publications (2020–2025) address topics like Arctic sea ice dynamics, freshwater dispersion, and marine optics. His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, including Indigenous knowledge in coastal ecosystem studies. He teaches courses in oceanography and hydrologic optics, emphasizing polar and high-latitude systems.
His office is located at 580 Wallace Building, University of Manitoba, with contact via jens.ehn@umanitoba.ca or +1(204) 480-1493.
