Dr. Alex Beresford is an Associate Professor in African Politics at the School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS), University of Leeds. He serves as Director of Research and Innovation for POLIS and maintains affiliations with the Centre for Social Change at the University of Johannesburg and the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC) at Leeds University Business School.

His research focuses on political struggles over inequality, power, and corruption in South Africa, alongside global diplomatic contestation in vaccine access, conflict resolution, and climate change. He leads the interdisciplinary Just Transition project funded by the Hans Böckler Foundation (€666,000), examining political, social, and legal challenges in shifting to net-zero industries.
Recent publications analyze bricolage in international relations, emancipatory populism, and Africa’s role in global norm development. His work bridges political ecology, transitional justice, and postcolonial governance frameworks.
