Dr. Markus Fraundorfer is an Associate Professor of Global Governance at the University of Leeds' School of Politics and International Studies (POLIS). He specializes in global governance dynamics, Brazilian foreign policy, and global challenges such as climate change and health epidemics. His research emphasizes equitable and democratic global systems, with a focus on contributions from the Global South.
Before joining Leeds in 2018, he held postdoctoral positions at the University of São Paulo and visiting roles at PUC-Rio, the University of Brasília, and the University of Edinburgh. He earned his PhD from the University of Hamburg and GIGA Institute.
His work includes five major books: Brazil's Emerging Role in Global Governance (2015), Rethinking Global Democracy in Brazil (2018), Global Governance in the Age of the Anthropocene (2022), South American Policy Regionalism (2024), and an upcoming study on the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative (DNDi). These explore Brazil’s influence in global health, environmental governance, and regional cooperation.
His research spans global justice, planetary crises, and Brazilian foreign policy, arguing for more inclusive global governance models. Current projects include analyzing DNDi’s pharmaceutical commons approach to neglected diseases and Latin American regionalism.
