Kai Michael Kenkel

Prof. Dr. Kai Michael Kenkel is a Professor at the Institute of International Relations (IRI/PUC-Rio) since 2013 and Associate at the German Institute for Global and Area Studies (GIGA) since 2017. His work focuses on global security, intervention norms, and international responsibility frameworks.

His research explores security governance, standards for military interventions, and responsibility to protect mechanisms, with particular emphasis on Brazil's evolving role in global politics. Recent publications analyze Lula's foreign policy shifts, BRICS dynamics, and UN Security Council norm contestation.

Kenkel has lectured at GIGA events including End of the Rise? BRICS Summit in India (2016) and State Crisis and Olympic Games in Brazil (2016). He teaches courses on Latin America in international relations and has received research funding from CNPq.
