Alex Bamji is an Associate Professor of Early Modern History at the University of Leeds, affiliated with the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Cultures. Her research spans religious reform, death, and disease in early modern Europe, with a focus on Venice.

Her work examines mortality, funerary practices, and public health in Venice, integrating documentary, visual, and material evidence. She highlights the agency of the laity in Catholic reform and the role of confraternities in shaping devotional practices.
Recent publications explore drowning, resuscitation, health passes, and the material culture of death. Awards include AHRC and British Academy grants. She directs the Leeds Arts and Humanities Research Institute and co-convenes the interdisciplinary Venetian Seminar.
