Alan Jasanoff is a Professor in Biological Engineering and Brain & Cognitive Sciences at MIT. He directs the Center for Neurobiological Engineering and holds an Associate Membership at the McGovern Institute for Brain Research. His work focuses on developing advanced neuroimaging techniques to study brain function, integrating tools from chemistry, molecular biology, and nanotechnology. Jasanoff earned an AB in Biochemical Sciences and a PhD in Biophysics from Harvard University, and an MPhil in Chemistry from Cambridge University. He has received prestigious fellowships including the Herchel Smith and Whitehead Fellowships, and holds multiple grants for innovation in neuroscience. His lab explores brain-wide dynamics, neuroengineering, and molecular imaging, with emphasis on noninvasive MRI-based methods. Notable contributions include novel MRI contrast agents, genetically encoded sensors, and studies on peripheral influences on resting-state brain activity. He authored the book *The Biological Mind*, critiquing neurocentric views of cognition.
Education: AB in Biochemical Sciences (Harvard), PhD in Biophysics (Harvard), MPhil in Chemistry (Cambridge). Key roles: Director of MIT's Center for Neurobiological Engineering, Principal Investigator (PI) of the Jasanoff Lab. Awards include NIH innovation grants and recognition for translational research. Current projects involve developing neural probes, imaging brain-periphery interactions, and advancing MRI techniques for clinical applications.
