Ed Boyden is an Associate Professor at MIT with joint appointments in Biological Engineering and Brain and Cognitive Science. He leads the Synthetic Neurobiology group at the MIT Media Lab and co-directs the Center for Neurobiological Engineering. His research develops tools for analyzing and engineering brain circuits, including optogenetic technologies for neural control and robotic methods for neural recording.
Research interests include creating technologies for mapping brain circuits, controlling neural functions, and developing neuroengineering approaches to treat brain disorders. His work has pioneered new methods for controlling and observing neural activity with light and microfabricated interfaces.
Boyden has received the Andrew Carnegie Prize in Mind and Brain Sciences for his contributions to neuroscience and bioengineering. He teaches neuroengineering principles at MIT, including strategies for launching neurotechnology companies.
