Edward Stuart Boyden is the Y. Eva Tan Professor of Neurotechnology at MIT, holding professorships in Brain & Cognitive Sciences, Media Arts & Sciences, and Biological Engineering. He is an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, McGovern Institute for Brain Research, and Yang Tan Collective. As co-director of the MIT Center for Neurobiological Engineering and the K. Lisa Yang Center for Bionics, he leads the Synthetic Neurobiology Group, pioneering technologies like optogenetics and expansion microscopy. His work focuses on developing tools to analyze and repair biological systems, with applications in neuroscience and biomedical engineering.
Boyden earned a Ph.D. in Neurosciences from Stanford University and holds degrees in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, and Physics from MIT, graduating at age 19. His research spans synthetic biology, nanofabrication, and noninvasive brain stimulation. He has been honored with numerous awards, including the Breakthrough Prize in Life Sciences and memberships in the National Academy of Sciences and American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
His lab’s innovations, such as robotic directed evolution and nanoscale imaging techniques, aim to decode brain function and address neurological disorders. He actively teaches neuroscience courses, mentors researchers, and engages the public through TED talks and workshops.
