Professor Alan Marcus is a cultural historian, filmmaker, and Chair in Creative and Cultural Practice at the University of Aberdeen. He holds a PhD from the University of Cambridge and previously served as Director of the Centre for Screen Studies at the University of Manchester. His work bridges academic research with artistic practice, focusing on film’s role in interpreting historical memory, urban environments, and cultural identity. Key projects include documentaries analyzing sites like Auschwitz, Hiroshima, and Nuremberg, which explore the intersection of trauma, history, and place.
Research interests encompass visual culture, postcolonial urbanism, and the ethics of historical representation. Notable works include City of Toys (2024) and Madame Donalda (2024), which critically examine historical narratives through film. His academic roles include Visiting Fellowships at Wolfson College and the Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH), Cambridge.
Recognition includes Fellowships from the Royal Historical Society and Royal Society for Arts, alongside grants such as the Carnegie Trust-funded 216 Beach Walk, Waikiki. Marcus’s work frequently involves interdisciplinary collaboration, blending film, history, and geography to interrogate complex cultural legacies.
