Millicent Marcus is the Sarai Ribicoff Professor of Italian Studies at Yale University, with affiliations in Film and Media Studies. She holds a PhD in Italian from Yale (1974) and a BA in English from Cornell (1968). Her career includes roles at the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, and visiting positions at institutions like the University of Toronto and Syracuse in Italy.
Her research focuses on Italian cinema, medieval literature, and Holocaust representation. Key works include Italian Film in the Shadow of Auschwitz (2007), After Fellini (2002), and Filmmaking by the Book (1993). Recent essays explore postmodern cinema, Fellini’s legacy, and contemporary Holocaust narratives.
Her awards include the Premio Flaiano, Presidential Book Prize, and Guggenheim Fellowship. She has directed 18 dissertations, mentored scholars in Italian studies, and contributed to editorial boards for journals like Italica and Quaderni d’italianistica.
Her grants include a Getty Senior Research Grant and multiple research assignments. She lectures globally on Italian cinema’s cultural and historical dimensions, including Holocaust memory and intertextual film adaptations.
