Alan I Marcus is the William L. Giles Distinguished Professor and Head of the Department of History at Mississippi State University (MSU). He previously served as Professor and Head at Iowa State University (1988–2005) and held roles in academic leadership, including interim department headships in chemistry and directorships in research centers. His research focuses on the history of science, technology, agriculture, and medicine, with a particular emphasis on land-grant universities' roles in shaping American society. He earned a Ph.D. (1979), M.A. (1975), and B.A. (1972) in History from the University of Cincinnati and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Marcus’s work bridges historical analysis with policy studies, examining topics like agricultural science legitimacy, cancer research institutions, and the evolution of technology policy. His books include Land of Milk and Money (2021), Malignant Growth (2018), and Technology in America (multiple editions). He co-edits the Nexus book series on science and technology history with the University of Alabama Press.
His awards include the Gladys L. Baker Award for Lifetime Achievement in Agricultural History (2020) and recognition as a Fellow of the Agricultural History Society. He has directed National Endowment for the Humanities institutes and contributed to projects on urban history, medical archives, and agricultural policy.
