Marcus's research focuses on the therapeutic potential of hybrid genres, with particular interest in medical anxiety, intergenerational trauma, and gender dynamics in personal narrative. Her Avoidant Type memoir-in-progress explores decades-long health avoidance patterns.
Recent publications include A Reasonable Stand-in for Self-care (2025) and explorations of wartime masculinity in David Winner's Enemy Combatant (2021). She contributes to outlets like The Smart Set and The Brooklyn Rail, where her interviews reveal complex intersections of personal and political.

Marcus combines pedagogical innovation with artistic practice, teaching how essays can merge personal reflection with cultural analysis. Outside academia, she engages with gardening, hiking, and pottery while continuing to publish widely in literary journals.
