Dr Alan MacPherson is a Lecturer and Deputy Head of the Institute for Sport, Physical Education & Health Sciences (ISPEHS) at the University of Edinburgh. He also serves as Programme Director for the MSc Performance Psychology. His roles include teaching and supervision across postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in Performance Psychology, Applied Sport Science, and Physical Education.
Education: BSc (undergraduate) from Queen Margaret University College, MSc in Research Methods in Psychology from the University of Strathclyde, and PhD in 'Utilising rhythmicity to optimise the execution of gross motor function' from the University of Edinburgh (2002–2006).
Research focuses on optimising gross motor skills, decision-making expertise in physical/social settings, and bioenergetic efficiency in athletes. Current projects include motor control in cyclists, perceptual control in elite athletes, and the role of 'sources of information' in skill execution. He also investigates group dynamics and expert decision-making.
Teaching & Supervision: Responsible for teaching Dynamics in Performance Teams, supervising BSc Honours Theses, and guiding PhD students like Raymond Bobrownicki. Active as a reviewer for the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology, Journal of Sports Sciences, and International Journal of Sport Psychology.
Labs/Teams: Associated with the Human Performance Science Research Group.
