- MFA from Bowling Green University
- MFA from Boise State University
Heathcock's research and creative interests center on American literary traditions, particularly exploring themes of violence, resilience, and transformation in the American West and contemporary United States. His writing often examines how ordinary people navigate extraordinary circumstances, with a focus on moral complexity and human endurance. His work shows strong influences from literary giants like Cormac McCarthy while maintaining a distinct voice that blends gritty realism with profound compassion.
His major publications reveal a trajectory from the grounded realism of his short story collection VOLT to the more speculative, mythic territory of his novel 40. Both works demonstrate his signature style of 'cool, grim' observation combined with deep empathy for his characters. His writing consistently explores American identity, faith, family, and the consequences of violence—whether physical, social, or political.
Major Awards:
- Whiting Award
- GLCA New Writers Award
- National Magazine Award
- Fellowships from National Endowment for the Arts, Sewanee Writers' Conference, Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, Lannan Foundation, and Idaho Commission on the Arts
VOLT was selected as a 'Best Book' by GQ, Publishers Weekly, Salon, Chicago Tribune, and Cleveland Plain Dealer, named a New York Times Editors' Choice, and was a finalist for the Barnes & Noble Discover Prize. His novel 40 has received praise from major literary figures including Anthony Doerr and Rebecca Makkai, who compared his work to Flannery O'Connor writing post-apocalyptic fiction 'with a pen of fire.'
