Kirby Gann is a Professor in the Brief-Residency MFA in Writing Program at Spalding University, renowned for his literary contributions and impactful novels. His works explore themes of identity, social critique, and Appalachian culture, blending lyrical prose with gritty realism. He has authored three novels, co-edited an award-winning anthology, and contributed essays on narrative craft.
Research interests include creative writing pedagogy, Appalachian literature, and the intersection of fiction with cultural critique. His novel Ghosting (2012) was praised as 'hillbilly noir as literary fiction of the first order' and received a starred review from Publishers Weekly. Earlier works like Our Napoleon in Rags (2005) and The Barbarian Parade (2002) established his reputation for bold storytelling.
Recipient of the Kentucky Arts Council's Individual Artist Fellowship and Professional Assistance Awards, Gann’s writing has appeared in The Louisville Review, Oxford American, and others. He previously served as Managing Editor at Sarabande Books for 18 years, now freelancing in book design and editing.
His MFA program teaching emphasizes nurturing creative voices while maintaining rigorous literary standards. Collaborations include co-editing A Fine Excess (2001), celebrating experimental prose and poetry.
