Marie-Helene Bertino is the Ritvo-Slifka Writer-in-Residence and Lecturer in the Department of English at Yale University. She is known for her literary works, including the novel Beautyland (2024), named a Best Book of 2024 by major publications, and the upcoming short story collection Exit Zero (2025). Her writing explores themes of contemporary fiction and narrative innovation.
Her awards include the Pushcart Prize, Frank O’Connor International Short Story Fellowship, and recognition in O. Henry/PEN and Best American Short Stories. Bertino has taught in MFA programs at NYU, The New School, and the Institute for American Indian Arts. She designed the free online initiative Disrupting Realism, which reached 1,300 participants in 2021.
Bertino’s research and creative work focus on narrative form and literary fiction. Her academic contributions include mentoring emerging writers and advancing accessibility in graduate-level creative writing resources.
