Robert Cohen is a Professor of English and American Literatures at Middlebury College, where he teaches creative writing and literature courses. He has previously taught at Harvard, Rice University, the University of Houston, and the Iowa Writers Workshop. Cohen holds a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA from Columbia University. His publications include novels such as Amateur Barbarians, Inspired Sleep, and The Organ Builder, as well as a short story collection, The Varieties of Romantic Experience. His writing has appeared in Harper’s, Paris Review, GQ, and The Believer.
His courses span creative writing workshops (e.g., fiction, poetry, nonfiction) and literary analysis, including studies of the short story, modernist literature, and contemporary English-language works. Cohen’s research interests focus on narrative forms, the intersection of fiction and nonfiction, and 20th-century literary movements. He has supervised senior theses in creative writing and critical analysis, emphasizing composition, revision, and interdisciplinary approaches to literature.
