Alan Buss is the Director of the School of Teacher Education and Professor at the University of Wyoming’s College of Education. He holds a B.S. (1989) and M.A. (1993) from Brigham Young University, and a Ph.D. (1998) from the University of Wyoming.
His research focuses on integrating educational technologies—such as GIS, GPS, dynamic geometry software, Vernier Probeware, LEGO robotics, computer gaming, and 3D visualization via Microsoft Hololens—to enhance science and mathematics understanding. He developed curricular materials and 3D simulations for the Shell 3D Visualization Center, aiding middle school students and pre-service teachers in grasping density concepts. Current NSF-funded work (Award #2021198) explores immersive, socially mediated experiences for atomic-scale phenomena.
Dr. Buss has extensive administrative experience, including 8 years as department head, chair of the College of Education’s Tenure and Promotion Committee, and leadership roles in university committees like the Mobile Computing Task Force. Regionally, he directed the Education Public Access Resource Center, supporting K-12 teachers in Wyoming and surrounding states to use geospatial and satellite technologies in classrooms.
Teaching responsibilities include science/math methods for pre-service elementary teachers and graduate courses on learning theory, history of STEM education, and technology integration. He also supervises residency and practicum experiences.
