Alaa Elwany is a Professor in the Department of Industrial & Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University, holding the Mike and Sugar Barnes Career Development Fellowship and the Kincaid Professorship in Undergraduate Teaching Excellence. He is also a Chancellor EDGES Fellow and affiliated with the Materials Science & Engineering program.
He earned his Ph.D. in Industrial & Systems Engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2009. His research focuses on advanced manufacturing processes, particularly additive manufacturing of metals, process monitoring, printability assessment of materials, uncertainty quantification, and reliability engineering.
Elwany has received notable awards such as the AAAS Science and Technology Policy Fellowship (2022), George L. Smith International Award (2022), and NSF CAREER Award (2019). His work emphasizes computational frameworks for process optimization and material design in additive manufacturing, addressing challenges like defect control and phase transformation in alloys.
His publications span topics such as laser powder bed fusion, shape memory alloys, and hybrid manufacturing techniques. He collaborates on initiatives like the NSF-funded 'Science of Producing Metallic Parts with Location-Specific Properties' and explores applications in aerospace and semiconductor industries.
