Ajay Malshe is the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Distinguished Professor of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University, with a courtesy appointment in Agricultural and Biological Engineering. He is affiliated with the School of Mechanical Engineering and holds offices at 585 Purdue Mall, West Lafayette, IN.
His research focuses on:
- Bio-inspired designs,
- Surface engineering and multifunctional materials,
- Convergent Manufacturing for Industry 5.0,
- Systems integration and productization,
- Heavy-duty machinery challenges,
- Heterogeneous integration across mechanical, electrical, and optical systems,
- Precision agriculture and food systems,
- Frugal engineering and social equity,
- Manufacturing in space.
He has received numerous accolades, including:
- Fellowships from five societies (ASM, ASME, CIRP, IoP, NAI),
- Member of the National Academy of Engineering (2018),
- Edison Awards for innovations like TuffTek® and nGlide®,
- R&D 100 Award (2013), and
- Multiple industry and government recognitions.
A dedicated educator and innovator, Malshe has advised over 60 graduate students and mentored thousands of undergraduates. His entrepreneurial ventures have led to 25+ products commercialized across industries. He holds 22+ patents and has secured significant funding for his research initiatives.
